A Neutral Place by Franco Sortini

Issue 99

The landscape does not exist, it exists only in the eyes and in the mind of those who look.

With this idea for many years I am photographing cities and urban landscape. In the chaos of modern cities I seek order and symmetry, recalling the "ideal city" of the Italian Renaissance.

My cities are not desert cities, but cities that live in their predetermined order, no noise, no pollution, and where the traces of the inhabitants testify of their time.

The light that illuminates them, always widespread and shadowy, emphasizes the architectural features and makes them all the same, a neutral place.

Franco Sortini lives and works in Salerno, Italy.
