Close at Hand by Kevin J. Miyazaki

Issue 8

Within Reach (2007 - present) is an examination, in detail, of the environment of home. My initial motivation was to challenge my visual curiosity, and to simply create more pictures outside of my larger project and assignment work. But I now find a relationship to photographs from an earlier series, Early Places (2004 - present), in which I document my childhood home. The Early Places pictures are meant to encapsulate memory - to stop time and capture a space as I wish to remember it in the future. In Within Reach, the subject matter is random and decidedly unsentimental. But similarly, these pictures serve as a record of the space around me - both long ago and today. As a photographer, I'm encouraged to know that I can make images in an environment so close, and yet previously unnoticed.
