Cruces by Steffanie Padilla

Issue 119

Cruces, is an ongoing series about a small rural town in Chihuahua, México where my mother was born and raised in. Over the years, I have gradually become observant on how incredibly arbitrary and easily shaped an individuals developing identity can be based on his or her environment. Because of this, I am interested in exploring the various factors that influence the town and its people, specifically by cultural norms and the media. The human-animal relation is also a major component within the work where I critically analyze how ideas are formed regarding the treatment of other animals. As I place myself in a vastly different yet familiar territory, my grandfather’s cattle ranch, family members, and objects marked by time, pose questions about my own worldviews by examining a space that has indirectly embedded itself into my existence.
